Shuck The Sulfurstar #1
By Rick Smith
Published by Sulfurstar; $2.95 USD

The fallen demon Shuck is one of the most interesting and unusual characters in comics, and I'm delighted to see him back in the pages of a regular title (they're promising 12 bi-monthly issues) again. The first four issues and some previously-unpublished stories were collected by Top Shelf a couple of years back, and you'd do well to catch yourself up on those, but you can start fresh here, as Smith has turned back the clock a bit, giving us some previously-unknown history of the character and how he came to meet young Thursday Friday (I love that name) and came to be resident #666 of the small community of Thicket.

I'm sure Shuck is an acquired taste, with its made-up dialect and Seth-by-way-of-Kochalka artistic presentation. But if you allow yourself to be immersed in Shuck's world, the invented language reveals wonders to behold (remember Alan Moore's "Pog" in Swamp Thing?), and the art is some of most lovely you can find in the pages of today's comics. Grade: 4.5/5
