#0002: 02 JUNE 2004

It Must Be Official -- I must officially be an editor-in-chief again; I just got off the phone with a reviewer who I assigned to review a comic. That feels weird. No hints as to which comic it was. You'll find out.

My thanks to everyone who has linked to Comic Book Galaxy or dropped me an e-mail saying they're glad to see us back. We missed you too.

The Long Holiday Weekend -- My family had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, the highlight of which was a visit to Mass. MoCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. All the current exhibits were terrific, but the corpus installation -- a multi-media experience featuring music, chanting, falling paper and a multi-level exhibit area -- was the definition of majestic. Anyone within a couple hours' drive of North Adams, Massachusetts should stop by the museum and check it out. Plan to stay inside it for at least a half-hour.

I also read some comics, re-reading (for the third time) Grant Morrison's entire New X-Men run. I was so blinded by the poorly-coordinated artist changes during the run itself that I totally missed out on the wonderful throughline Morrison pulled off. His run on the title is truly one of the best superhero runs ever, up there with Miller's Daredevil or Moore's Swamp Thing. A little more consistency in the art would have helped me see that more clearly as it was happening, but in retrospect, it was quite an achievement and if for some reason you haven't read these issues, you should buy 'em up or get the hardcovers. The story is collected in three New X-Men hardcovers from Marvel, the last of which is shipping this summer.

Reading Morrison's New X-Men, of course, left me hungry for more Morrison. I'd already devoured The Filth, so I re-read Seaguy #1. This early on, I have no idea where the story is going, but I rarely do on the first read of any Morrison title. Cameron Stewart's art is stunning, head and shoulders above his excellent Catwoman stuff, and there is so much to look at and absorb that I am really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Congratulations -- Received Supernatural Law #40 in the mail today, celebrating 10 years of Batton Lash's horror/sitcomic. Ten years in independent comics is a real accomplishment, so congrats to all involved.

The Week in Comics -- Here's a quick rundown of stuff worth seeking out this week. Remember, new comics day is Thursday in the U.S. due to the Memorial Day holiday.
