#0007 28 JUNE 2004

The Week in Comics -- Here's a rundown of what I'm picking up at the comics shop this Wednesday...

COMING WEDNESDAY JUNE 30TH

DC COMICS

BATMAN HARLEY & IVY #3 (Of 3) $2.50 -- This energetic, witty mini-series has had something for everyone. It's kept me, and my 8 and 10 year olds all very happy. We will miss it now that it's coming to a close. DC really should open up the vault and pay Timm and Dini whatever it takes to get a regular monthly title out of them. Call it Showcase and let them do whatever the hell they want. Just do it.

PLANETARY VOL 3 LEAVING THE 20TH CENTURY HC $24.95 -- Glad to finally have this third hardcover edition. The series, as good as it is in individual issues reads even better in the collected volumes. And the production values of these hardcovers has been very good.

SLEEPER SEASON TWO #1 (Of 12) $2.95 -- Yep, this would be THE GODDAMNED BOOK OF THE MOTHEREFFIN' WEEK. If you have resisted the wild ride so far, read my review of the first few issues, pick up the first two trade paperbacks collecting the previous "season," and cath yourself up on the best monthly comic currently being published. Ed Brubaker's grim, affecting script and Sean Phillips' stark, neon-and-shadow artwork are reason enough to buy and love every issue, but the absolute key to the creative success of this wonderful series is the lead character, Holden Carver. One of the most complex and complete and compelling characters ever created in the medium, his plight gets worse and worse and he falls farther and farther from grace, but he never loses his humanity or our sympathy. Come on, buy this bastard already.

TEEN TITANS GO #8 $2.25 -- Buying this for the boy. It's nice that there's something new and appropriate almost every week now for both my kids. There could always be more, but, still, it's nice that there's at least something for them on new comics day.

INVINCIBLE #13 $2.95 -- There's not many superhero series that get better and better with every passing issue, but, well, here's one of 'em. Great stuff.

MARVEL

MARY JANE 2 HC $14.99 -- Getting this for the girl. She loved the first one. I love that they're making more. Keep it up.

ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #8 $2.25 -- I'll get this because it's Ellis and Immonen and I Want to Believe, but the first part of this arc left me pretty much ice cold. Some nice dialogue and an interesting idea or two, but nothing came together for me in a way that made me excited to see the next issue. Welcome to Marvel story-arcs, 2004.

FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

RAISIN PIE #3 (MR) $3.50 -- Worth noting that this title is on Comic Book Galaxy's new recommended reading list, a terrific two-cartoonist anthology with loads of great comics in every issue. As if Doofus wasn't enough!
