#0012 16 JULY 2004

The Eightball Challenge -- I know Eightball #23 only came out this week through Diamond, but it was available at at select shops for a few weeks before that, and since it's the best goddamned comic to come out this year (a status unlikely to change in the remaining months of the year), the Comics Internet needs to rise up and respond to this landmark work.

So far, Christopher Butcher has been tracking the discussion, but there's not much as of this morning. There's Sean Collins's review and my own, but I haven't been able to find any other reviews. I hope that the widely-read comics critics and reviewers will read and review this landmark issue; not to do so would really be dropping the ball on the most important release of the year to date.

Still craving discussion, we head to the message boards, where we find the TCJ boards thread, a mix of insight and incite, as you'd expect. More moderated is the thread at the Barbelith board.

Perhaps the most fun of all, for me, is the discussion between myself and Title Bout's AK at Pop Culture Bored.

So there's some discussion going on, but Eightball #23 is an exciting achievement that pushes forward both comics in general and creator Dan Clowes in specific. I want to know what everyone gets out of this issue. So buy it, write you own review, send it to me, and I'll post the best ones here at Comic Book Galaxy. The best and most original entry will win a prize pack of comics.

All too often the complaint is heard that the internet doesn't provide insightful criticicm of the comics artform. Sean Collins has gone a long way to dispel that idea in his review, but I need more. Much more. So let's hear it, already.
